A Quick and Inexpensive Holdiay Decorating Idea

If you only want one holiday decorating idea, this one is it. Add greens everywhere. Greenery adds so much warmth and character to any space like entryways, living rooms, kitchens, and bathrooms. When I do redesigns adding a tree or plant is the single most dramatic change I make and it really wakes up a room. And, adding greenery doesn't have to cost you a single penny. Chances are if you go out in your back yard you'll have everything you need for a great wreath, garland, or even just a little punch of green for your displays or your mantel.

Cut some pine branches, arborvite branches, or any other evergreen you have. Gather pine cones, berries, nuts, twigs, or vines to add interest to your greenery. Then all you need is some wire or string to tie your branches together.

Now look around your home. Do you have a small collection of items like shells, bells, thimbles, toys, or ornaments? Use these to add to your greens for a festive holiday theme. So far it hasn't cost a penny! Now add lights. Try x-mas lights, candles, or even electric candle sticks will draw your eye right to the area. And finally, add some additional color with bows in any color, style, or pattern that will coordinate with your theme.

If you don't have the time or energy to use greens all over your house then just pick one area you want to use as a focal point and go all out. Using this one, inexpensive decorating tip will make your home feel festive, inviting, and full of spirit.

5 New Years Party Boosters

#1 Create mood lighting ~ Lighting can be the best way to get your home into the holiday party atmosphere. Think assortments! If you have dimmers use them. Dim your general lighting during your party and then add drama with accent lighting such as x- mas lights, up lights, or spot lights to highlight focal points or points of interest like buffet tables or fireplaces. The more different types of lighting the better.

#2 Arrange your furniture ~ Think about how you want to use your home for the party. Do you need an area for food? Conversation? Dancing? Now set up your furniture to work for each of your needs. For conversation a small intimate furniture grouping works best. Bring the furniture away from the walls to help create this effect. If your having a lot of guests try making a few different groupings to encourage different conversations amongst your guests. For eating, try setting up a table for a buffet in an area that is easily assessable yet not in an area where your guests have to constantly excuse themselves to get to it. And for dancing or karaoke just make sure you have some unobstructed area near the music so you can really let loose.

#3 Make your buffet table a masterpiece ~ Use your buffet table as one of your focal points. Add heights and levels by stacking boxes or upside-down bowls to make different heights for displaying food. Cover them with some beautiful holiday fabric by tucking and gathering it all over and around the table. Add some sparkle with x-mas lights randomly scattered about the table. And finally add some greens to bring the table to life. Now just place your serving dishes on top of and around the highs and lows and your food will look even better than it smells.

#4 Don't forget the bathroom ~ Shut off your general overhead lighting and add a small lamp and light some candles for a comforting atmosphere. Add extra mirrors under the candles to reflect more light. Use fragrant candles in holiday scents to disguise bathroom odors. And pamper your guests with some new decorative hand towels, scented soaps and lotions set out on the counter for their enjoyment.

#5 Do you need to entertain the children? ~ Do yourself and your guests a favor and hire a sitter to entertain the children for the evening. Set aside an area such as a family room where the children can listen to there own music, play games, and make some holiday crafts without fear of making a mess or getting hurt. You and your adult guests will be able to relax and enjoy the evening with the children close by.

Unusual Ideas For Holiday Decorating

Do you struggle every year with what to do with all of the holiday cards? Maybe you hang them on a door way, tape them to the refrigerator, or just keep piling them up on the counter? How about this idea? Take your dining table or kitchen table and turn them into holiday card showcases. All you need to do is drape your table with a decorative tablecloth in a solid color (to coordinate with the rest of your decorating of course). Then arrange your cards all over the table. Now simply put a peice of plexi glass, glass, or even a clear plastic tablecloth over it for protection and easy cleaning. You can even try it with your occational tables, just omit the tablecloth! Isn't this a great way to display your holiday cards and share them with your guests?

Want a creative idea for hanging that same old wreath? First start with an old wooden picture frame, an old window frame, or a small section of fence. Hang it on the wall and depending on the size you may want to hang a grouping of them for impact. Now add a nail to the top front of the frame and hang your wreaths from them. This is a great country Christmas look
